Does anybody else live on res at uni and think that Deakin internet sucks absolute cock?
Main Post:
I live on res at Warrnambool... the internet they provide here on res is so shit. I may as well be talking into a fucking tin can on a string to my neighbors, least that's how it feels.

Deakin Geelong here - We get a straight 8mbps between 9am-8pm and then it's un-throttled between those hours meaning we can get up to 300mbps down....
Works out well enough to stream high definition tv during day and it's amazing at night...
Have you approached your res supervisor/manager etc?
Uni students live on ‘two-minute-noodle diet’ as 2,000 queue for a hot meal each week

Would help a lot if the universities weren’t systematically stealing the wages of their low paid, insecure casual staff (which are often these same students).
What's it like to live in Stratford for uni students?
Main Post:
I'm an international student coming to QMUL for my studies, and was thinking about renting a place in or around Stratford. I've heard that it's a bit dodgey and unsafe, and that we'd be better off living in areas like Spitalfields or Aldgate East. Is that so? Or would it be perfectly fine to live in Stratford as well?
Top Comment:
I've not lived there but being based east am somewhat familiar with it. Imo I don't think it's great compared to nicer areas on the other side of the Lea towards town like mile end and most parts of bow. These are in between Stratford and Spitalfields and aldgate etc (latter two would be more expensive) so personally would say look there instead. It does have the Westfield and Olympic Park going for it, but the former really isn't a draw for me personally
Where to find live uni?
Main Post:
The only place I’ve found live sea urchin is at Nobu, but Nobu is kind of pricey and overrated for what you pay. I know Water Grill also stocks this item sometimes, but it’s all the way up in Orange County. Looking for other spots in San Diego that serve this rare item.
It doesn’t have to be a restaurant either. If there is some sort of fisherman’s market that serves it, feel free to list it below!

is sheffield a good place to live? uni student
Main Post:
I received an offer to study at UOS and as an international student, I really have no idea what sheffield is like. please tell me if its a good place to live or not. is there a lot of homeless people around? how far from the city centre are the poverty areas?
Top Comment: Generally I would say Sheffield is split east/west with most of the city that is west of the city centre being nice and most of the east not so nice. The west of the city is right next to the Peak District, which is a beautiful national park. The university itself is in the west of the city centre area, so nice. It’s in a very safe area full of trees and nice Victorian housing. Sheffield often proudly says it has more trees than any other English city. In terms of the city centre, it is pretty dead - this is mainly because of a huge shopping centre called Meadowhall which sits to the east of the city. Most of the big chain stores that would usually have a store in a typical British city centre have their branch there not in the city centre, which has led the city centre to die a bit. That and Amazon I guess. The uni student union is very good and has won ‘best in the country’ awards many times. One final thing-the people of Sheffield are generally a nice friendly lot. Another thing about the uk is that the further north you go the friendlier people are so Sheffield is good for that too. I think it’s a great uni.

No, as soon as you step through security at Heathrow Airport, you will be shanked to death.
Harsh, but I don't make the laws.
Is Southampton really that bad of a place to live?
Main Post:
I have exeter as my insurance, and my firm will either be bristol or southampton (comp sci). Went to southampton open day, and the city seems really dull + really far away from the campus. It reminded me of where I live rn (also dull) and I really don't want to spend the next 4 years of my life in another dull place.
Bristol (although I havent ever travelled there myself) obviously is way nicer. And I guess its overall a better uni. But theres so many downsides like
- apparently accomodation is shit, people are being placed really far like in wales (and im applying pretty late too)
- they dont offer a work placement year which i value quite a bit
- they have slightly higher grade requirements so theres a very good chance i dont even get in
Basically im kinda stuck on what to firm and im wondering if anyone has any anecdotes about southampton being as bad or not as bad as i think it is. But it just feels like I have no good option here.
Top Comment: Uni of Southampton grad here. In case you want to live next to city centre you may consider to apply for accommodation in Mayflower Halls. It’s 18 minutes from Uni by bus (Unilink), free bus card if you live there. Majority of clubs are nearby (Oceana, Switch, Café Parfait and many others). However, my friends who did computer science or engineering have been studying quite a lot, so I assume you would spend more time in Pret next to ECS building or cafes on the burgess road. Finally, there are plenty of student societies, so in terms of socials it is quite good. P.S. if you choose Southampton, I advise you not to go to Common at night 🙂
What type of student accomodation do you live in, and how much is your rent?
